Administrative Law
The Firm has considerable experience in representing a broad range of clients before many state and federal agencies, including the North Carolina Board of Mortuary Science, the North Carolina State Bar Association, the North Carolina Division of Environment, Health and Natural Resources and the North Carolina Employment Security Commission.

Alternative Dispute Resolution
Firm members are experienced in conducting arbitrations. Mr. Whittington has been certified to conduct Superior Court mediations since 1996. In that time, he has mediated more than 400 cases in various areas of the law.

Auto Accidents
Members of the Firm have many years of experience handling injury claims arising from auto accidents. We have broad experience in handling and resolving claims involving serious and permanent injuries either through settlement or trial. Our lawyers work on all elements of claims that need to be addressed, including medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering and damage to automobile or other property.

Business Law
Members of the Firm regularly form and assist in the operation of corporations, limited liability companies and partnerships, and have broad experience as counsel in stock and asset acquisitions and divestitures in many sectors of the business community, from soft drink bottlers, manufacturing concerns and funeral homes to oil and propane distributors and real estate holding companies. Our lawyers serve as counsel to hundreds of closely held companies and family partnerships and limited liability companies and regularly provide advice on nonvoting stock recapitalizations, use of assignee interests, shareholder agreements and other such structures in connection with maintaining control while passing interests to younger generations. Our lawyers have litigated a broad range of business disputes involving breach of contract, deceptive trade practices, derivative actions and employment disputes.

Civil Litigation
We provide representation in civil litigation matters in both state and federal courts. We handle a wide range of cases, ranging from helping clients with insurance coverage and contract disputes to business litigation and real estate matters.

Criminal Defense and Appeals
The Firm enjoys an active criminal defense practice in the state and federal courts, having tried to a jury over 200 cases, and has developed broad experience in DNA evidence and structured sentencing guidelines. Our attorneys regularly brief and argue in the federal and state courts on Constitutional issues, and handle criminal appeals before the North Carolina Court of Appeals, the North Carolina Supreme Court and the Federal Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Mergers, Acquisitions and Divestitures
The firm has considerable experience in assisting business clients with mergers and asset acquisitions, including those involving Fortune 500 companies. Our lawyers regularly advise clients with respect to, and handle changes in, business structures, including mergers, acquisitive and divisive reorganizations, recapitalizations, and liquidations.

Personal Injury
Members of the Firm have many years of experience handling injury claims arising from the negligence or misconduct of others. We have broad experience in handling and resolving claims involving serious and permanent injuries either through settlement or trial. Real Estate
The Firm handles hundreds of commercial and residential real estate transactions each year. Our lawyers negotiate and structure ground leases with Fortune 500 companies and have assisted in the acquisition of scores of major shopping centers, office complexes, manufacturing sites and apartment complexes in many states . We routinely handle tax-deferred like-kind exchanges and reverse like-kind exchanges, and work with national lenders on conduit loans and with regional banks on more conventional financing arrangements. We have also litigated and handled appeals in a variety of contested real estate issues, ranging from easement abandonments to agricultural nuisance cases.

Taxation
We advise individual, corporate and partnership clients on a range of tax planning issues, including tax-sensitive entity formation, operation, and liquidation and with mergers and consolidations. We have an active tax controversy practice, and handle audits and appeals before the Internal Revenue Service and the North Carolina Department of Revenue.

Traffic Law
We represent clients who have received citations ranging from minor to major traffic offenses.  Example of such offenses include speeding violations, equipment violations, and driver license suspensions.

Trusts and Estates
We assist clients with a range of estate planning needs, particularly wealth transfer for those subject to the federal estate tax and gift tax laws. We provide advice on and draft Wills, Revocable and Irrevocable Trusts, Charitable Trusts, Durable Powers of Attorney, Medical Directives, Health Care Powers of Attorney, HIPAA Authorizations and Prenuptial Agreements, and are experienced in handling audits and estate litigation, including will contests, declaratory judgments to interpret wills and trusts and proceedings to modify or terminate irrevocable trusts and to remove trustees.

Work-Related Accidents
The Firm frequently represents those who have been injured while on the job. We assist clients with their claims for medical treatment, compensation benefits and vocational rehabilitation issues. We have handled numerous settlements and hearings before the North Carolina Industrial Commission.

Wrongful Death
The Firm is highly experienced in handling wrongful death claims, working with family members of the deceased to recover medical expenses, funeral bills and lost income as well as other benefits available under the North Carolina wrongful death statute.
